10 Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus | black fungus treatment | ringworm treatment for humans

Toenail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection of your nails. The most striking mark is the white, brown, or yellow color of one or more of your nails. It can spread and cause the nails to thicken or crack.

Sandals or not, toenail fungus is usually not something you want to see when looking at your feet. Fortunately, there are several treatments you can try.

Oral prescription antifungals, such as terbinafine (Lamisil) or fluconazole (Diflucan), are commonly used to treat toe fungus. These treatments are usually effective but can cause serious side effects from stomach upset and dizziness to severe skin problems and jaundice.

This may be why many people try home remedies instead. Here are 10 of the most popular home remedies.

1. Vicks VapoRub

Vicks VapoRub is anointed topical oil. Although designed to prevent coughing, its active ingredients (camphor oil and eucalyptus oil) can help treat nail fungus.

A 2011 study found that Vicks VapoRub had a “positive clinical” effect on treating toenail fungus.

To use, apply a small amount of Vicks VapoRub to the affected area at least once a day.

2. Snakeroot Release

Snakeroot (Ageratina pichinchensis) is an antifungal made from plants of the sunflower family.

A 2008 study by Reliable Source showed that the remedy is effective against toe fungus as an antifungal prescription drug ciclopirox.

In the study, snakeroot extract was applied to the affected area every third day of the first month, twice a week for the second month, and once a week for the third month.

3. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil, also called melaleuca, is an essential oil with antifungal and antiseptic properties.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative HealthTrusted Source, some small clinical studies have shown that tea tree oil may be effective in combating nail fungus.

To use, apply tea tree oil directly to the affected nails twice a day with a cotton swab.

4. Oregano oil

Oregano oil contains thymol. According to a 2016 review, thymol has antifungal and antibacterial properties.

To treat toenail fungus, apply oregano oil to the affected nail twice daily with a cotton swab. Some people use oregano oil and tea tree oil together.

Both products are powerful and can cause irritation or allergies. Involvement may increase the risk.

5. Extraction of olive leaf

An active ingredient in the extract of olive oil, oleuropein, is thought to have anti-fungal, antimicrobial, and antibodies.

You can use olive leaf soap directly on the nail fungus or eat in the form of a capsule.

According to a 2012 revision, taking one to three olive leaf capsules twice a day is more effective than olive oil in treating fungus toes. It is recommended that you drink plenty of water throughout the process.

6. Ozonized oil

Ozonized oil oils such as olive oil and sunflower oil are “injected” with ozone gas.

According to a 2011 study at Reliable Source, this type of ozone exposure to low concentrations can produce many organisms such as mold, yeast, and bacteria.

Another study Reliable Source found that ozonized sunflower oil was more effective in treating toe fungus than the topical antifungal, ketoconazole (Xolegel).

To treat toenail fungus with ozonized oil, apply the oil to the affected nails twice a day.

7. Vinegar

Only anecdotal evidence exists that supports vinegar as a treatment for nail fungus. Still, it is a safe home remedy to try.

To use, soak the affected foot in one part vinegar in two quarts of warm water for up to 20 minutes daily.

8. Listerine mouthwash

Listerine mouthwash contains ingredients such as menthol, thymol, and eucalyptus, which have antibacterial and antifungal properties. This may be why it is a popular folk remedy for toenail fungus.

Therapists recommend soaking the affected foot in an amber Listerine bowl for 30 minutes daily.

9. Garlic

2009 Review Reliable Source found that garlic has some antifungal and antimicrobial properties.

You can treat fungal nails with garlic by placing chopped or crushed garlic cloves on the affected area for 30 minutes daily.

It may be better, and less invasive, to treat it internally and externally with garlic pills. Take as directed by the manufacturer.

10. Adjust your diet

The link between food and health is clear: The healthier foods you eat, the better your body’s ability to fight off conditions such as nail fungus.

Give your body the nutrients it needs with food:

  • probiotic-rich yogurt
  • sufficient protein to support the regeneration of nails
  • enough metal to prevent broken nails
  • foods rich in essential acids
  • foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, such as low-fat dairy products

When to see a doctor

If you have diabetes, toenail fungus can lead to sores on the feet or other foot problems. According to a 2012 study, the chronic fungus is a major risk factor for bacterial cellulitis of the leg.

If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system, you should not use home remedies for toe fungus. Contact your doctor for a proper course of action.

An important point

Home remedies may be more effective than prescription drugs for treating mild to moderate nail fungus. Although home remedies often have few side effects, there is little scientific evidence that they work.

Home remedies may take longer to clear toe fungus than topical treatments or oral systemic antifungals. You may not see results for a few months. Re-infection is common.

Once the infection is gone, keep your nails dry, clean, and well-cut. Severe cases of toenail fungus may cause pain and irreversible toenail damage. If you try home remedies to treat the infection and they don’t work or cause side effects, consult your doctor.
