What is tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a prescription drug. It comes as an oral tablet.

The oral Tadalafil tablet is available as the brand name drugs Cialis and Adcirca. It is also available in standard form. Ordinary drugs are usually less expensive than the version of the brand name. In some cases, they may not be available in all strengths or types as the brand-name drug.

Why it is used

Tadalafil (Cialis) is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or erectile dysfunction (ED), or both. Tadalafil (Adcirca) is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

With BPH, the prostate gland grows but does not have cancer. It can squeeze or squeeze the urethra (a tube that drains urine from the kidneys). Symptoms of BPH include urinary incontinence, painful urination, and a normal or urgent need to urinate.

With ED, the penis does not fill with enough blood to make it stronger and bigger when the man is sexually happy. ED can also prevent a man from maintaining an erection.

PAH is a rare but serious form of high blood pressure. It occurs in the pulmonary arteries, which are the blood vessels in your lungs.

How to use tadalafil

How often should you take tadalafil before sex? Tadalafil can be prescribed in two different ways, either daily dose or on the required basis. Your doctor will give you any. If you are taking tadalafil on the required basis, you should take it at least 30 minutes before sex. If you take it every day, try to take it at the same time every day.
How often should you take tadalafil? Tadalafil should not be taken more than once in 24 hours. If you miss a dose during this time, take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, never double your dose. If you miss a dose and are already waiting for the next one, skip the missed dose.

Should tadalafil be taken with food? Tadalafil can be taken with or without food and is not affected by the type of food you are taking.

How does this work

Tadalafil belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. A drug class is a group of drugs that work similarly. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.

Tadalafil can help release muscle in your prostate and others. This can help improve your BPH symptoms.

To improve the symptoms of ED, tadalafil helps increase blood flow to the penis. This can help you get and maintain an erection. For tadalafil to help you have an erection, you need sexual arousal.

In PAH, tadalafil works to improve your ability to exercise by relaxing the blood vessels in your lungs. This increases blood flow.

Important warnings

Heart disease warning. You should not use tadalafil if you have a heart attack and your doctor has advised against sexual activity.
Call your doctor right away if you have symptoms during sex such as chest pain, dizziness, or nausea. Having sex can put extra pressure on your heart.
This is especially true if your heart is already weak from a heart attack or a heart attack.

Priapism Warning. Priapism is an erection that will not go away. Without treatment, this condition can cause permanent damage to your penis.
This damage includes weakness (inability to be proud).
If you experience an erection that lasts more than 4 hours, call your doctor immediately.
Tadalafil may interact with other medications

Tadalafil oral tablets may interact with other medications, vitamins, or herbs you may be taking. Interaction is when something changes the way a drug works. This can be dangerous or prevent the medicine from working properly.

To help prevent interactions, your doctor should treat all your medications carefully. Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications, vitamins, or herbs you are taking. To find out how this drug can interact with something you are taking, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Examples of drugs that may cause interactions with tadalafil are listed below.

Angina Drugs (nitrate)

If you take tadalafil with nitrate, your blood pressure may drop dramatically to dangerous levels. This can make you feel dizzy or make you faint. Examples of nitrates include:

  • nitroglycerin
  • Isosorbide dinitrate
  • Isosorbide mononitrate
  • amyl nitrite
  • butyl nitrite

High blood pressure or prostate drugs (alpha-blockers)

If you take tadalafil with certain alpha-blockers, your blood pressure may drop dramatically to dangerous levels. This can make you feel dizzy or make you faint. Examples of these drugs include:

  • terazosin
  • tamsulosin
  • doxazosin
  • prazosin
  • alfuzosin

Certain HIV drugs

Taking tadalafil with certain HIV drugs can increase the levels of tadalafil in your blood. This can lead to lower blood pressure, dizziness and fainting, as well as vision problems. In men, it can also lead to priapism. These drugs are protease inhibitors and include ritonavir and lopinavir/ritonavir.

Oral antifungal drugs

Taking certain antifungal drugs with tadalafil may increase the levels of tadalafil in your blood. This can lead to lower blood pressure, dizziness and fainting, as well as vision problems. In men, it can also lead to priapism. Examples of these drugs include ketoconazole and itraconazole.

Antibiotics

Taking certain antibiotics with tadalafil may increase the level of tadalafil in your blood. This can lead to lower blood pressure, dizziness and fainting, as well as vision problems. In men, it can also lead to priapism. Examples of these drugs include:

  • clarithromycin
  • erythromycin
  • telithromycin

Some types of antibiotics may lower the level of tadalafil in your blood. This can prevent tadalafil from working properly. This includes drugs such as rifampin.

Other drugs for erectile dysfunction (ED).

These drugs work in the same way as tadalafil. If you take them with tadalafil, it increases the risk of side effects. Examples of these drugs include sildenafil and vardenafil.

Other drugs for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

If you take tadalafil and other forms of PAH medication, your blood pressure may drop dramatically to dangerous levels. The drug riociguat is in this class of drugs.

Stomach acid drugs

Taking these medications with tadalafil may keep your body from absorbing tadalafil. An example of this type of drug is magnesium hydroxide/aluminum hydroxide.

Drugs for epilepsy

Taking certain anti-seizure drugs with tadalafil may lower the level of tadalafil in your blood. This can prevent tadalafil from working properly. Examples of these drugs include:

  • carbamazepine
  • phenytoin
  • phenobarbital

Tadalafil Warnings

This drug comes with a few warnings.

Allergy warning

Tadalafil can cause severe allergic reactions. Symptoms may include:

  • rash
  • chest
  • trouble breathing or swallowing
  • swelling of your lips, throat, or tongue

If you experience these symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

You can also take this drug if you have ever had an allergy to it. Taking it can also be dangerous (it is the cause of death).

Grapefruit Collaboration Warning

Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice may increase the levels of tadalafil in your blood. This raises your risk of side effects.

Alcohol abuse warning

Do not drink too much alcohol while taking tadalafil. Both alcohol and tadalafil can enlarge (expand) your blood vessels. When used together, they can cause your blood pressure to drop dramatically.

Warnings for people with certain health conditions

For people with heart disease: Having sex poses a risk to your heart. Using tadalafil may increase the risk. Do not use tadalafil if you have a heart attack and your doctor has advised against sexual activity.

For people at risk of long-term buildup: Tadalafil can cause priapism. This condition causes painful, long-lasting cravings. It is a medical emergency. Talk to your doctor before using tadalafil if you have a condition that puts you at greater risk for priapism. These conditions include cellular conditions such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia Peyronie’s disease (curved or paralyzed penis).

For children: Children younger than 18 years old shouldn’t use tadalafil. It’s not known if tadalafil is safe and effective in children.

For seniors: If you are age 65 years or older, your body may process this drug more slowly. Your doctor may start you on a lower dosage so that tadalafil doesn’t build up too much in your body. High levels of the drug in your body can be dangerous.

For women who are breastfeeding: It isn’t known if tadalafil passes into breast milk. If it does, it may cause serious effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk with your doctor if you’re taking tadalafil and you want to breastfeed.
